Our community’s strongest asset is its hardworking families. Yet, too many immigrant families, like Pam’s, struggle to make ends meet in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The Southeast Asian Development Center (SEADC) is here to empower these families with job placement, English language support, and resources for social-emotional wellness.
Pam and her family arrived in California from Thailand in 2021, seeking a better life. They quickly faced harsh realities. Pam and her spouse took a job with no health benefits, endured two-hour commutes, and worked grueling 12-hour shifts. With no time to learn English or access resources, Pam felt trapped in an all-too-familiar cycle of survival.
SEADC helped me build my confidence so I can make good choices for my future.
A local nonprofit referred Pam to SEADC, where our bilingual Thai-speaking staff provided her family with wraparound services. SEADC helped Pam secure employment support, housing resources, and access to necessities in her native language. Her teenage son even participated in SEADC’s summer youth employment program, earning his first paycheck.
“I didn’t know English and couldn’t help my son with school. I wasn’t making progress for my family, and it affected my well-being,” Pam shares. “SEADC helped me build my confidence so I can make good choices for my future.”
Today, Pam is working toward her short-term goals: enrolling in English classes, finding a stable job with benefits, and spending more time with her family. Her son is finishing high school and looking forward to a bright future.
